Mathematics Program at St Joseph’s Primary School
At St Joseph’s Primary School, Mathematics is an integral part of our curriculum. Our Mathematics Program is taught daily and aims to develop proficiency in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. We achieve this through explicit teaching, the use of concrete learning aids including technology, active involvement in discussions and problem solving, and by making mathematics relevant to everyday life. We believe that through the language and skills of mathematics, students will come to use this domain as a way to inquire into and make sense of the world around them. Our focus is on developing understanding rather than just memorising a set of numbers and figures. We have high expectations that students will experience success across all mathematical domains.
At St Joseph’s, we focus on:
- Hands-on experiential learning in the junior school: Engaging students with practical activities to build foundational skills.
- Using manipulatives: Making mathematics accessible and relatable to students through the use of concrete materials.
- Real-life problem solving: Encouraging students to apply mathematical concepts to everyday situations.
- Pre and post assessment: Ensuring teaching is targeted to meet the needs of each student.
- Rich discussions: Promoting deep understanding through discussions around mathematical language and concepts.
- Growth mindset: Developing a growth mindset in students through our “Mindset Maths” approach.
- Targeted intervention and extension: Working with small groups to provide both support and challenge as needed.
- Sophisticated mathematical thinking: Providing regular opportunities for students to reflect on their learning, discover their own errors, and develop refined mathematical thinking skills.
- Formal and informal assessments: Utilising a variety of assessments to monitor and support student progress.
Our Mathematics Program is supported by the collaborative efforts of Learning Adjustments and Differentiation Support Teachers, as well as Learning Support Officers who work alongside classroom teachers during numeracy sessions to provide targeted small group and individual instruction as needed.
