Social & Emotional Learning

Student Wellbeing is at the heart of all that we do at St Joseph’s and it is one of the things we are best known for! Central to our success in this area is the fact that we know your child as an individual and as a learner.  Wellbeing permeates all aspects of school life here. We see wellbeing as a shared responsibility, prioritising relationships between staff, students, and parents.  We focus on developing a culture of positivity, belonging, inclusiveness, collaboration, and agency.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. It involves learning skills like self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. By developing these skills, students can better handle daily challenges, improve their mental health, and achieve success in school and life.Wellbeing concepts such as resilience, growth mindset, and emotional regulation are explored in many ways at our school. They form a part of our social and emotional lessons, circle times and, where relevant, units of inquiry. Threads of these concepts can also be seen throughout our morning prayer time, regular mindful meditations, and learning engagements across the curriculum.

Our targeted teaching practices are guided by the Be You Initiative (Butterfly Body Bright), Zones of Regulation, Socially Sam, You Can Do It, and Respectful Relationships resources, all aligned with the SSIS SEL Learner Profile.

Throughout the school, students participate in various wellbeing events, such as Wellbeing Week, the Friendship Fair, Footy Colours Day, the annual Walk/Ride to School Breakfast, and whole school Fun Days.
